Writing
Sentences and Basic Punctuation
Writing complete sentences with correct capitalization and end punctuation including periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Distinguishing statements, questions, and exclamations.
Narrative Writing
Writing a short story with a beginning, middle, and end. Using time-order words such as first, next, and finally to sequence events clearly.
Informational Writing
Writing a short report on a chosen topic using facts gathered from books or classroom materials. Organizing information into a topic sentence and supporting details.
Spelling and Word Study
Spelling grade-level words with common patterns including long vowels, r-controlled vowels, and high-frequency words. Using a simple dictionary or word wall for checking spelling.
Language and Communication
Grammar: Nouns and Verbs
Identifying and using common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and action verbs in sentences. Understanding subject-verb agreement in simple sentences.
