What Is a Narrative?#

A narrative is a story. When you write a narrative, you are telling something that happened — real or made-up — in an interesting way. Narrative writing is one of the most fun kinds of writing because you get to be creative and use your imagination!

Real vs. Made-Up Narratives#

Narratives can be real or fictional.

• A personal narrative tells about something that really happened to you. For example, you might write about the day you got a pet, your first day of school, or a fun trip your family took.
• A fictional narrative is a made-up story. You create the characters, setting, and events from your imagination.

Both types of narratives tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

The Three Parts of a Story#

Every good narrative has three parts:

1. Beginning — This is where you introduce your characters and the setting. You "hook" the reader so they want to keep reading. A strong beginning might start with an exciting action, an interesting question, or a vivid description.

2. Middle — This is where the main events happen. Something exciting or challenging occurs. This is where the problem or adventure takes place. The middle is usually the longest part of your story.

3. End — This is where the story wraps up. The problem gets solved, or the adventure comes to a close. The ending should feel satisfying — the reader should not feel confused or left hanging.

Why Structure Matters#

Having a beginning, middle, and end makes your story easy to follow. Readers know where they are in the story. Good structure also makes YOU a better writer because you plan ahead instead of just writing random events.

Before you start writing, try drawing three boxes — one for the beginning, one for the middle, and one for the end. Write a quick note or draw a picture in each box about what will happen. This is called a story map, and it helps you stay organized!
