Using Context Clues#
Have you ever come across a word you did not know while reading? Instead of giving up or always asking for help, you can be a word detective and use context clues to figure out what the word means!
What Are Context Clues?#
Context clues are the other words and sentences AROUND an unknown word. They give you hints about what the new word means. The word context means the words and ideas that surround something.
Types of Context Clues#
1. Definition Clues Sometimes the author tells you exactly what a word means in the same sentence.
"The veterinarian, or animal doctor, checked the cat carefully." Here the author explains that a veterinarian is an animal doctor.
2. Example Clues The author gives you examples that help you figure out the meaning.
"She packed her luggage, like her suitcase and backpack, for the long trip." From the examples, you can figure out that luggage means bags and suitcases you take when travelling.
3. Synonym Clues The author uses a word nearby that means the same thing.
"The puppy was so tiny, so small, that it fit in my pocket." The word tiny is a synonym for small — they mean the same thing.
4. Antonym Clues The author uses a word that means the OPPOSITE, which helps you figure out the meaning.
"Unlike her calm and quiet sister, Mia was very boisterous." Since it says "unlike calm and quiet," you know boisterous means loud and lively.
How to Use Context Clues: Step by Step#
- Read the whole sentence (and the sentences before and after).
- Look for clues — examples, definitions, synonyms, antonyms.
- Make a smart güss about the meaning.
- Substitute your güss into the sentence. Dös it make sense?
- If not, try again or look it up in a dictionary.
Using context clues is a superpower for readers. It helps you keep reading without stopping, and it grows your vocabulary every single day!
