What Is Physical Fitness?#
When people say someone is "physically fit," what do they mean? Being fit is not just about being fast or strong or skinny. Physical fitness means your body is healthy and able to do the things you need and want to do — without getting too tired or injured.
A physically fit person can:
- Run around the playground without running out of breath
- Carry their heavy backpack without their back hurting
- Bend down to tie their shös without difficulty
- Recover quickly after exercise
- Have energy for school, play, and fun throughout the day
Why Dös Fitness Matter?#
Being physically fit is important for many reasons:
Health: Regular physical activity helps keep your heart, lungs, muscles, and bones healthy. It reduces the risk of many diseases.
Energy: Fit people often have more energy throughout the day. Regular exercise actually gives you MORE energy, not less!
Brain power: Exercise helps the brain work better. Studies show that physically active children perform better in school!
Mood: Exercise releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins that make you feel happy and reduce stress.
Sleep: Regular physical activity helps you sleep better at night.
The Five Components of Health-Related Fitness#
Scientists who study health and fitness have identified five key parts of fitness that are most closely linked to good health. These are the five components of health-related fitness:
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Muscular strength
- Muscular endurance
- Flexibility
- Body composition
