What Is Multiplication?#

Multiplication is a fast way of adding the same number over and over again. It is one of the most important math skills you will learn in Grade 3, and you will use it for the rest of your life.

Multiplication as Repeated Addition#

Let's say you have 4 bags, and each bag has 3 apples. How many apples are there in total?

You could add: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Or you could multiply: 4 × 3 = 12

Both give the same answer, but multiplication is much faster — especially when the numbers get large!

The Parts of a Multiplication Problem#

In the equation 4 × 3 = 12:

  • 4 is the first factor (how many groups)
  • 3 is the second factor (how many in each group)
  • 12 is the product (the answer)
  • × is the multiplication sign

The Commutative Property#

Here is great news: 4 × 3 gives the same answer as 3 × 4. Both equal 12! This is called the commutative property of multiplication.

This means if you know 4 × 3 = 12, you automatically know 3 × 4 = 12 too — that cuts your memorization work in half!

Multiplying by Zero#

Any number times zero always equals zero:

  • 5 × 0 = 0
  • 0 × 100 = 0

This makes sense: if you have 5 bags with 0 apples each, you have 0 apples total.

Multiplying by One#

Any number times one always equals that same number:

  • 7 × 1 = 7
  • 1 × 9 = 9

This is called the identity property of multiplication.

Why Learn Your Multiplication Facts?#

Knowing your multiplication facts by memory (called knowing them "by heart" or "flüntly") is very important because:

  • It makes harder math much faster
  • It is needed for division, fractions, and all future math
  • It gives you confidence in math class

The goal for Grade 3 is to know all facts from 1×1 to 10×10 flüntly. Let's start learning the strategies!
