Mathematics
Grade 3 mathematics covering multiplication and division facts, fractions, area and perimeter, and bar graphs
Multiplication and Division
Multiplication Facts and Strategies
Learning multiplication facts up to 10x10 using strategies such as skip-counting, arrays, and the distributive property. Understanding multiplication as repeated addition and as rows and columns in an array.
Division Facts and Concepts
Understanding division as equal sharing and as repeated subtraction. Learning division facts as the inverse of multiplication and solving basic division equations within 100.
Problem Solving with Multiplication and Division
Applying multiplication and division to solve one- and two-step word problems. Identifying which operation to use and checking the reasonableness of answers.
Fractions and Number Sense
Understanding Fractions
Understanding fractions as equal parts of a whole or a set, naming unit fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. Placing fractions on a number line and comparing fractions with the same numerator or denominator.
Equivalent Fractions
Identifying pairs of equivalent fractions using fraction models and number lines. Understanding that different fractions can represent the same amount.
Rounding and Estimation
Rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. Using rounding to estimate the results of addition and subtraction problems and checking whether answers are reasonable.
Measurement, Geometry, and Data
Area and Perimeter
Measuring the area of rectangles by counting unit squares and using the formula length x width. Calculating perimeter by adding the lengths of all sides of a polygon.
Bar Graphs and Scaled Pictographs
Reading and interpreting bar graphs and pictographs where each symbol represents more than one unit. Creating graphs from data sets and answering questions requiring addition and subtraction of data values.
Telling Time and Elapsed Time
Reading analogü and digital clocks to the nearest minute. Solving problems involving elapsed time using a number line or clock model.
