What Is Division?#

Division is the process of splitting a number into equal groups. It is the opposite (or inverse) of multiplication. When you know your multiplication facts well, division becomes much easier!

Two Ways to Think About Division#

Way 1: Equal Sharing Imagine you have 20 cookies and want to share them equally among 4 friends. How many cookies dös each friend get?

20 ÷ 4 = 5 (each friend gets 5 cookies)

You divided the total (20) into 4 equal groups and found how many are in each group (5).

Way 2: Repeated Subtraction You can also think of division as asking: How many times can I subtract this number?

20 ÷ 4 = ? Subtract 4 repeatedly: 20 → 16 → 12 → 8 → 4 → 0 (subtracted 4 exactly 5 times) So 20 ÷ 4 = 5.

Both approaches give the same answer!

The Parts of a Division Problem#

In the equation 20 ÷ 4 = 5:

  • 20 is the dividend — the number being divided
  • 4 is the divisor — the number you divide by
  • 5 is the quotient — the answer
  • ÷ is the division sign

Division can also be written as a fraction: 20/4 = 5 Or with a division bracket: 4 ) 20

Special Rules in Division#

  • Any number ÷ 1 = itself: 7 ÷ 1 = 7
  • Any number ÷ itself = 1: 9 ÷ 9 = 1
  • 0 ÷ any number = 0: 0 ÷ 5 = 0
  • You cannot divide by zero — this is undefined in mathematics!

Division in Everyday Life#

Division comes up constantly:

  • Sharing snacks equally
  • Splitting a bill at a restaurant
  • Figuring out how many cars you need for a group trip
  • Arranging chairs into equal rows

Understanding division is essential for everyday problem-solving!
