What Are Equivalent Fractions?#

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have different numerators and denominators but represent the same amount. They look different but they are equal in value.

A Pizza Example#

Imagine two identical pizzas:

  • Pizza A is cut into 2 slices. You take 1 slice = 1/2 of the pizza.
  • Pizza B is cut into 4 slices. You take 2 slices = 2/4 of the pizza.

You have the same amount of pizza in both cases! This means 1/2 = 2/4. These are equivalent fractions.

More Examples of Equivalent Fractions#

FractionEquivalent Fractions
1/22/4, 3/6, 4/8
1/32/6, 3/9
1/42/8
2/34/6

Why Equivalent Fractions Are Important#

Understanding equivalent fractions helps you:

  • Compare fractions more easily
  • Simplify fractions (write them in a simpler form)
  • Add and subtract fractions (in later grades)
  • Understand decimals — 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25

How to Recognize Equivalent Fractions#

A quick mental check: if you multiply (or divide) both the numerator and denominator by the same number, you get an equivalent fraction.

Example: 1/2 × (2/2) = 2/4. Both 1 and 2 were multiplied by 2. Example: 3/6 ÷ (3/3) = 1/2. Both 3 and 6 were divided by 3.

Now let's explore how to see and prove equivalent fractions using models and number lines!

A Real-Life Example#

Equivalent fractions appear in everyday life all the time. Imagine a chocolate bar divided into 8 equal pieces. Eating 4 pieces is the same as eating half the bar — 4/8 = 1/2. Or think about a school day divided into 6 equal periods. If you have maths for 2 periods, that is 2/6 of your day, which equals 1/3. Recognizing equivalent fractions helps you make sense of portions, shares, measurements, and many other real situations.
