What Are Striking and Fielding Games?#
Striking and fielding games are a whole category of sports where one team hits a ball and runs, while the other team tries to field (retrieve) the ball and put runners out. These games develop coordination, teamwork, and spatial awareness.
Common Striking and Fielding Games#
- Baseball (USA, Japan) — bat and pitched ball
- Softball — like baseball with a larger, softer ball
- Rounders (UK, Ireland) — similar to baseball; batter hits a bowled ball
- Cricket (UK, Australia, India) — bat and bowled ball; very different scoring system
- T-ball — modified baseball for beginners; ball rests on a tee (no pitcher)
Core Concept: Two Teams, Two Roles#
All striking and fielding games share the same basic structure:
- Batting team: One player at a time tries to hit the ball and run around bases
- Fielding team: All players in the field, trying to catch the ball and put batters out
Basic Objectives#
Batting team wants to:
- Hit the ball into the field (not out!)
- Run around bases safely
- Score runs (by completing the circuit of bases)
Fielding team wants to:
- Catch the ball before it bounces (batter is out!)
- Get the ball to a base before the runner arrives (runner is out!)
- Get three outs as quickly as possible (then teams switch)
Why These Games Are Great for Skill Development#
Striking and fielding games develop:
- Eye-hand coordination — hitting a moving ball
- Throwing accuracy — fielding and throwing to bases
- Catching — tracking the ball and timing
- Running and agility — base running
- Decision making — when to run, where to throw
