What Are Net and Wall Games?#

Net and wall games are sports where players use a racket, paddle, or body part to send a ball or shuttle over a net (or off a wall) into an opponent's court or space. These games develop hand-eye coordination, agility, positioning, and tactical thinking.

Two Categories#

Net games: Players are separated by a net

  • Badminton
  • Tennis
  • Table tennis (ping pong)
  • Volleyball (covered separately)
  • Pickleball

Wall games: Players share a space and hit against a wall

  • Squash
  • Racquetball
  • Handball
  • Fives (traditional British game)

Core Concept: Court Boundaries#

In all net games, the court is the defined playing area. The lines on the court determine:

  • In bounds — ball lands in the court = valid
  • Out of bounds — ball lands outside = player loses the point
  • Service boxes — designated areas the serve must land in
  • No man's land — the net divides the court; the ball must clear the net

Two Core Skills in Net Games#

Sending: Hitting the ball/shuttle over the net

  • Serve
  • Groundstroke
  • Volley
  • Smash/spike

Receiving: Returning the ball/shuttle sent to you

  • Ready position
  • Footwork to reach the ball
  • Controlled return

Why Court Position Matters#

In net games, WHERE you stand is as important as HOW you hit:

  • Standing too close to the net leaves you vulnerable to balls hit behind you
  • Standing too far back makes it hard to reach short balls near the net
  • Ready position (central position) allows you to react to any shot
