What Makes a Good Team?#

In physical education, team games teach skills that extend far beyond the playing field — communication, cooperation, leadership, and resilience. These are life skills that matter in school, careers, and relationships.

Elements of a Successful Team#

1. Communication Teams that communicate well outperform teams with more individual talent but poor communication. In sport, communication includes:

  • Verbal: Calling for the ball ('Mine!' or 'Here!'), warning teammates ('Behind you!'), calling defensive assignments
  • Non-verbal: Eye contact, pointing, gesturing to indicate where you will move
  • Active listening: Hearing and following the strategy from your teammates and the teacher

2. Trust Trust means believing your teammates will do their job. Players who trust their teammates:

  • Pass the ball confidently rather than always trying to do everything themselves
  • Defend their zone knowing others are covering theirs
  • Accept mistakes from teammates without blame

3. Shared Goals Every player must understand the team's goal for the round, game, or season. When individuals pursue personal goals (like scoring points for themselves) rather than team goals, team performance suffers.

4. Inclusion A good team makes every member feel valued and included:

  • Pass to players who are not as involved
  • Celebrate small contributions, not just goals or points
  • Avoid forming cliques — rotate partners and teams regularly

Roles in a Team#

Different team sports assign different positions and roles. Understanding your role helps the team function:

  • Offense: Creating scoring opportunities
  • Defense: Preventing the other team from scoring
  • Support: Positioning to receive passes, creating space
  • Leadership: Calling plays, encouraging, organizing

Good teams are flexible — players move fluidly between roles as the game demands.
