Geometry, Measurement, and Data

Students convert between units within the same measurement system (customary and metric), including length, weight/mass, and liquid volume. They solve multi-step word problems requiring unit conversions.

The Customary System#

The customary system is the measurement system used in the United States. It uses units such as inches, feet, pounds, and gallons. In Grade 4, you will learn to convert between units within this system.

Customary Length Conversions#

Larger UnitSmaller UnitConversion
1 foot12 inches× 12
1 yard3 feet× 3
1 yard36 inches× 36
1 mile5,280 feet× 5,280

Examples:

  • 3 feet = 3 × 12 = 36 inches
  • 4 yards = 4 × 3 = 12 feet
  • 2 miles = 2 × 5,280 = 10,560 feet

Customary Weight Conversions#

Larger UnitSmaller UnitConversion
1 pound16 ounces× 16
1 ton2,000 pounds× 2,000

Examples:

  • 5 pounds = 5 × 16 = 80 ounces
  • 3 tons = 3 × 2,000 = 6,000 pounds

Customary Liquid Volume Conversions#

Larger UnitSmaller UnitConversion
1 cup8 fluid ounces× 8
1 pint2 cups× 2
1 quart2 pints× 2
1 gallon4 quarts× 4

Memory aid: Giant Quirky People Cry → Gallon, Quart, Pint, Cup (each bigger than the next)

The Rule: Larger to Smaller = Multiply#

When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you multiply by the conversion factor. This makes sense because you need more of the smaller unit to make the same amount.
