What Is Cardiovascular Fitness?#

Cardiovascular fitness (also called aerobic fitness or cardiorespiratory fitness) is the ability of your heart, lungs, and blood vessels to efficiently deliver oxygen to working muscles during sustained exercise.

The Cardiovascular System: A Quick Tour#

Your cardiovascular system consists of:

  • Heart — a powerful muscle that pumps blood throughout the body
  • Blood vessels — arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart; veins carry used blood back
  • Blood — transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste products

What Happens When You Exercise?#

When you start exercising:

  1. Muscles need more oxygen — they are working harder
  2. Heart beats faster — to pump more blood to muscles
  3. Breathing becomes faster and deeper — lungs take in more oxygen and release more carbon dioxide
  4. Blood vessels dilate — to increase blood flow to working muscles
  5. You get warmer — muscles generate heat; you sweat to cool down

Why Is Cardiovascular Fitness Important?#

Short-term benefits:

  • More energy for sports and activities
  • Better performance in sustained exercise
  • Faster recovery after activity

Long-term health benefits:

  • Stronger heart muscle — pumps more efficiently
  • Lower resting heart rate (efficient heart)
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes
  • Better mental health — exercise releases feel-good chemicals
  • Healthy weight management
  • Stronger immune system

What Is Aerobic Exercise?#

Aerobic means "with oxygen." Aerobic exercise is any activity that:

  • Can be sustained for several minutes or more
  • Requires a steady supply of oxygen
  • Raises your heart rate to a moderate-to-high level

Examples: jogging, swimming, cycling, jump rope, dancing, soccer, basketball
